Dhaka: Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said their party is ready to forge a unity with left-leaning political parties based on a consensus on the issues of the Liberation War and Bangabandhu.

‘It’s a matter of great pleasure that the leftists are speaking in the same tune that they won’t form any unity with communal forces...let’s forge a maximum unity on minimum points,’ he said.

Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, came up with the remarks while speaking at a programme at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the 51st founding anniversary of Samyabadi Dal of Bangladesh.

Mentioning that he did student politics with many of those who are now in the left-party alliance, led by Communist Party of Bangladesh, the AL general secretary said he has no disrespect for the left parties. ‘Let’s get united over the Liberation War and Bangabandhu issues.’

Quader said their party wants a national unity to be forged against communal evil force. ‘We also want a national unity against the enemies of the Liberation War, unhealthy politics, corruption and terrorism. We want the unity with the pro-Liberation forces.’

He urged those who believe in the spirit of the Liberation War and love Bangabandhu not to weaken the pro-liberation forces by joining hands with the anti-Liberation forces.

The ruling party leaders said some political parties are trying to remove Sheikh Hasina, not Awami League. ‘Plots are on both at home and abroad behind the scene, and Sheikh Hsian is their main target. Even, efforts are on to kill her.’

Turning down BNP’s allegation that the government is filing cases against BNP leaders as part of its plan to hold a unilateral election, the minister said law enforcers are lodging the cases on charge of hatching conspiracies for carrying out subservice acts.

He, however, said their party does not want any case to be filed unfairly. ‘Police are saying they (BNP leaders) are making plans to carry out subversive and terrorist acts in the name of a movement like that of 2014.’

Quader suggested BNP leaders to go to court to face the case if they think they are innocent.
