Chandpur: A minor girl died after she fell into an open septic tank in Harina Ferryghat area of Chandpur Sadar upazila on Tuesday noon.

Locals said Asma Akter Pakhi, 3, daughter of Alamgir Hawladar of the area, fell into the septic tank, which is a property of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), at about 12:00pm unnoticed while playing with other children at the BIWTA field.

After a frantic search, locals found the girl in the septic tank, which has no lid and remains uncared for long.

She was taken to a local hospital where doctors declared her dead.

Agitated at the incident, locals brought out a procession in the area and demanded removal of the officials concerned of BIWTA for their negligence.

BIWTA deputy director Mostafizur Rahman, however, blamed local people for breaking the lid of the septic tank.
