Dhaka: Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmood on Thursday expressed his firm belief that people will not elect those who have amassed black money and illegal wealth.

He came up with the remarks while addressing a views-exchange meeting at the ACC headquarters marking its 14th founding anniversary, reports the UNB.

The ACC chief said the national anti-graft body will look into the spreading black money in the name of election expenses during the 11th parliamentary elections. ‘The Election Commission is responsible for conducting the election. But, the ACC will look into the expenditure of black money in the name of election expenses. The Commission expects all will maintain transparency in election expenditure and submit the expense details to the Election Commission in due time.’

Calling for not giving any false information in the wealth statement, he said if there is anything illegal, thee ACC will take legal steps.

Iqbal Mahmood said if anyone accumulates black money or illegal wealth violating the constitution or using muscle power, the Commission will bring them under justice no matter what their political, societal or professional identity is.

If government officials commit corruption under illegal pressure or with any immoral intention, they will have to face dire consequences, he said. ‘However, the Commission will file no case for any unintentional mistake,’ he said.

The ACC chairman admitted that the Commission might not have succeeded in achieving its desired goals for various limitations.

Mentioning that the Commission lacks people’s confidence due to delay in completing investigation into any complaint in the stipulated time as promised, he asked the officials to perform their duties with more sincerity.

ACC Secretary Dr Shamsul Arefin, Director General Mostafizur Rahman and Director Shirin Parvin were, among others, present on the occasion.
