Farabi’s involvement in Avijit murder not found yet: DB

Dhaka: Detective Branch joint commissioner Monirul Islam on Sunday said they have been interrogating Shafiur RahmanFarabi, a suspect of blogger and writer Avijit murder, but his involvement in the gruesome murder has not been found yet.
‘A list of 10 people has been prepared for their suspected link to Avijit murder, and a drive will be launched to arrest them,’ he told journalists at a press briefing at Dhaka Metropolitan Police media centre.
‘The list was created after examining the facebook accounts of Farabi and Avijit and as per the statement of Farabi. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) team will assist us in identifying the listed suspects,’ he added.
He said the FBI team is suspecting that extremist group was involved in the killing of Avijit for his write-ups.
Monirul Islam said the FBI team held several meetings with the detectives and also talked to Avijit’s father Ajay Roy and CID.
The team expressed satisfaction over the progress of investigation conducted by DB, he added.
As Avijit was an American citizen, a case will be filed there over the murder and investigation will also be conducted, Monirul said.
Blogger and writer Avijit Roy was killed and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya injured seriously as miscreants stabbed them on the Dhaka University campus on 26 February.
Avijit and Rafida, an expatriate couple living in the US, returned home a few days ahead of the horrific incident as his two books were published on the occasion of Amar Ekushey Book Fair.
A four-member team of FBI arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday to assist the Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies to investigate the Avijit murder case.
