BFUJ, DUJ condemn attack on journalists

Dhaka: Two organisations of journalists on Tuesday condemned attack on newsmen in Nawabganj on Monday.
Ten journalists were injured and 18 cars were vandalised during the assault, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) said in a joint statement, reports the UNB.
Unidentified assailants attacked journalists at Shamim Guest House in Kolakopa on Monday night. The newsmen had gone there to cover electioneering.
BFUJ and DUJ demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers.
‘The state and the government will have to shoulder the responsibility and take steps to curb such attacks,’ said leaders of the organisations.
In another statement, they expressed concern over the formulation of policy for journalists during the polls by the Election Commission.
The urged the EC to reconsider its decision, saying: ‘The EC will be benefited if it moves away from its policy about [banning] the use of motorcycles by journalists and allowing reporters inside polling centres.’
