Benapole: A teenager girl reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at Abad Kochua village in Jashore sadar upazila as she could not tolerate an assault of her mother and brother following their protest against harassment by some eve teasers.

The deceased was identified as Halima Khatun, 13, a class VIII student of Darus Sunnat Mojaddedia Dakhil Madrasa in the upazila.

Halima’s brother Mohammad Abdullah said when he along with his mother and sister were returning home after casting their votes on December 30 at Abad Kochua Government Primary School polling centre, a group of youths teased his sister and tried to abduct her.

When he along with his mother resisted them, they assaulted them, said the victim’s brother.

However, hearing their screaming, locals rushed in and the eve teasers fled away.

When they informed union parisahad member Jahidul Islam Bidyut about the assault, he assured them of taking necessary steps but did not, said the brother.

Following the incident, Halima committed suicide by hanging herself with her scarf with a beam of her room around 11pm, alleged her brother.
Meanwhile, the victim’s brother filed a case with Kotwali Police Station against seven young men in this connection, said Apurba Hasan, officer-in-charge of the police station.

The accused are Yusuf Ali, son of Barek Miah, Nirob and Jibon, sons of Hafizur Rahman Hafiz, Sumon, son of Farid, Rashed, son of Khokon, Ashik and Shanto of the village.

However, the UP member claimed that there had been a love-affair between Halima and one of the accused. Over the issue, Halima’s brother had a scuffle with the accused.
