Dhaka: Bangladesh has sought China’s ‘strong support’ so that Myanmar moves in the right direction for resolving Rohingya crisis as Myanmar is not working to create conditions for the return for Rohingyas to their place of origin in Rakhine, reports the UNB.

During her recent visit to Bangladesh, UN’s human rights expert on Myanmar Yanghee Lee said it is evident that Myanmar is not working to create conditions for the return of Rohingyas but is engaging in a sustained campaign of violence, intimidation and harassment.

While appreciating Chinese humanitarian assistance for the displaced people of Rakhine State, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Sunday sought China’s support when Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Zhang Zuo met the minister at his office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

Ambassador Zhang said China is willing to play a ‘constructive role’ in realising repatriation of displaced people and will maintain close communication with Bangladesh and Myanmar to find a practical solution to the crisis.

Foreign Minister Dr Momen urged the Ambassador to take effective measures for speedy implementation of projects funded by China’s development assistance, according to MoFA.

Chinese Ambassador stated measures taken by Chinese government to reduce the trade gap between Bangladesh and China and increasing level of Chinese investment in Bangladesh for the development of industries.

Ambassador Zhang expects deeper engagement with the Foreign Minister to take the China-Bangladesh bilateral relations to a newer height.

He expressed his commitment to work with the government of Bangladesh to implement the decisions reached through consensus between two leaders of China and Bangladesh during President of China Xi Jinping’s visit to Bangladesh in October 2016.

The Ambassador wished to strengthen practical cooperation between two countries and accelerate implementation of the projects for common development and prosperity under Belt and Road Initiative.

Ambassador Zhang underlined the importance of the bilateral consultation mechanisms to steer the practical cooperation between the two countries.

The Foreign Minister emphasized economic diplomacy and acknowledged tremendous contribution of China to Bangladesh’s economic development.

He expressed gratitude to China for signing 27 agreements and MoUs worth billions of dollar investment, during Xi Jinping’s visit to Bangladesh in 2016 when bilateral relationship was elevated to strategic partnership.
