Rangpur: A Rangpur court on Tuesday granted bail to The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam in connection with a defamation case.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Shafiul Alam granted him bail on a bond of Tk1,000 after hearing the case, reports UNB.

The court also fixed 26 May for next hearing in the case.

Earlier, local Awami League leader Motahar Hossain Mandal Mawla filed a Tk1 crore defamation case with the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court on 15 February against Anam for publishing ‘confusing’ and ‘defamatory’ reports in his daily on Awami League President Sheikh Hasina during the military-backed caretaker government.

The court also summoned the accused for appearance on 1 Mar.
