Mahjabin murder: her husband’s bail stayed

Dhaka: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the operation of the 2 March High Court order that had granted bail to Humayun Sultan, a suspect-killer of his wife Shamarukh Mahjabin.
Passing the order following a state petition, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, fixed 1 April for the next date of hearing and asked the state counsel to file a regular appeal by the time.
Emerging from the court, assistant attorney general Sadhan Kumar Banik told reporters that following the apex court order, the accused will remain in custody.
Mahjabin, 26, was found dead at their Dhanmondi residence in the capital on November 13 last year.
Police held Humayun, son of advocate Khan Tipu Sultan, an ex-MP of Awami League from Jessore-5 constituency, immediate after filing the case with the Dhanmondi Police Station by Mahjabin’s father Engineer Nurul Islam accusing Humayun and his parents of killing his daughter as he did not believe Humayun and his parents claim that his daughter committed suicide.
Humayun and Mahjabin got married in April, 2013.
Meanwhile, other accused couple advocate Sultan and Jasmin Ara Begum, a teacher at Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College, are now enjoying pre-arrest bail following a High Court order.
