Savar: Two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) clashed at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Wednesday, leaving at least five activists injured.

Besides, JU Proctor Associate Professor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan suffered slight injuries when he tried to bring the situation under control, reports the UNB.

At least six rounds of bullets were fired during the melee, said witnesses.

The clash erupted after former JU unit BCL General Secretary Razib Ahmed Rasel was assaulted by incumbent secretary SM Abu Sufian Chanchal over previous enmity on the campus.

The injured were identified as Mostafa Shahin of Economics department, Sazzad Hossain and Bahar of Institution of Information Technology (IIT), Utshaw Datta of Physics and Roni of International Relations.

The injured were given first aid at the university medical centre.

Witnesses said Chanchal swooped on Razib and physically assaulted him at the central playground of the university around 5pm.

Later, Razib’s followers from different halls gathered at Bottala and locked in a clash with the rivals after equipped with weapons and sticks.

Contacted, JU Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan said police have been deployed to fend off further trouble. ‘‘We noticed that there were huge indigenous weapons at dormitories. We need to conduct raids on the dormitories as early as possible,’ he said.
