Russia seeks ‘inter-governmental commission’ with BD

Dhaka: Outgoing Russian Ambassador in Dhaka Alexander A Nikolaev on Thursday suggested forming an ‘inter-governmental commission’ between Russia and Bangladesh for further enhancing trade, economic scientific and technical cooperation.
The envoy came up with the suggestion when he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office in Dhaka.
After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.
Nikolaev also said Russia is ready to assist Bangladesh in its development drive and promote its different aspects.
Extending his thanks to the Prime Minister for extending cooperation to him, the diplomat Russia and Bangladesh have made a ‘well-done-job’ for further boosting bilateral relations during his four-year tenure in Dhaka.
Recalling Hasina’s visit to Russia in 2013, he said it gave a ‘fresh impetus’ to Russia-Bangladesh relations. “Our ties are growing steadily.” he noted.
Pointing to the successful holding of ‘Bangladesh cultural festival’ in Moscow, Nikolaev stressed the need for further increasing ‘cultural cooperation’ between the two countries.
Expressing satisfaction over the existing bilateral trade between the two countries, he said the trade balance between Bangladesh and Russia is almost equal.
Hasina noted with satisfaction both the countries are enjoying growing trade relations and underscored the need for further boosting the ties.
She recalled with deep gratitude Russia’s contributions to Bangladesh’ s Liberation War and its assistance to the reconstruction of the war-ravaged country and demining Chittagong Port.
Voicing satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations between the two countries, the Prime Minister said Bangladesh always values this relationship.
She conveyed her greetings to Russian President Vladimir Putin through the Ambassador.
PM’s Principal Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad was present at the meeting.
