Sylhet: Police here on Wednesday arrested a young man for reportedly raping a mentally-challenged teenage girl at Monaharpur village in Biswanath upazila of the district.

The arrestee is Fakhrul Islam, 24, son of Toimus Ali of the village.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Saiful Islam said Fakhrul violated the girl on Monday when she was alone at her house.

However, family members and locals alleged that some influential people, including UP member Jamal Ahmed, tried to hush up the incident in exchange for Tk 1.5 lakh through arbitration.

Meanwhile, police came to know about the incident on Tuesday, rescued the victim and sent her to hospital for medical test, the ASP said.

They also arrested the alleged rapist in the early hours of Wednesday.
