ICC team in city for primary probe into Rohingya repression

Dhaka: A seven-member delegation from the office of the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor arrived here on Wednesday for an initial probe into alleged atrocities committed against Rohingyas by the Myanmar military.
‘They’ll be staying in Dhaka for two days before going to Cox’s Bazar,’ an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, reports the UNB.
The ICC delegation members will have meetings with Law Minister Anisul Huq, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque in the city.
These meetings are likely to take place on Thursday, said an official adding that they will also have meetings with representatives of the international organisations.
Earlier, the ICC wanted to know Bangladesh’s opinion on whether The Hague-based court has jurisdiction to run a case on atrocities against Rohingyas.
The pretrial chamber of the ICC sent a letter to Bangladesh in this regard on May 7, 2018 seeking opinion on three specific matters by June 11, either publicly or confidentially.
Bangladesh responded to the request of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Rohingya issue, as the country is seeking a ‘sustainable solution’ to the crisis.
