Union Council member killed in Sylhet clash

Sylhet: A Union Council member was killed and at least 20 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Kourghari village in Kanaighat upazila on Friday noon over a mobile court verdict sentencing a youth for eve-teasing.
The deceased was identified as Dudu Miah, 35, a member of Lakkhipasha union in the upazila, reported UNB.
Locals said a mobile court on Thursday sentenced Sabab Uddin, a nephew of Dudu, to three months’ imprisonment for eve-teasing.
Dudu Miah engaged in an altercation with his nephew Rakib Ali today noon after blaming him for the incident.
At one stage, two groups of villagers—one led by Dudu and the other by Rakib—locked in a clash.
A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee that left 21 people, including Dudu, injured.
Dudu was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead.
Kanaighat police officer-in-charge Humayun Kabir said they arrested five people in connection with the incident.
