SC orders to submit Nizami appeal summary by 31 Mar
The Supreme Court ordered to submit the summary of death row convict Jamaat-e-Islami amir Matiur Rahman Nizami’s appeal petition against the death penalty by 31 March.
A four-member appellate division bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order for prosecution and defendant on Tuesday.
The other members of the bench are Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hassan Fayez Siddiqui.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the prosecution, while Jainul Abedin Tuhin argued for the defence.
Earlier in 24 February, the bench ordered to submit the appeal summary of Nizami within two weeks.
International Crimes Tribunal-1 in 29 October, 2014 awarded Matiut Rahman Nizami with death penalty for his crime against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Nizami appealed against the verdict on 23 November in the same year.
Of 16 charges Nizami found guilty in 9 charges including murder, killing intellectuals, looting, rape and others.
ICT-1 handed death penalty to Nizami for four charges while life term imprisonment for the other charges.
