Dhaka: BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Monday said the current government cannot stay in power for a long time as an ‘unusual’ situation has been prevailing in the country.

‘It’s an unusual incident that vote robbery took place on December 29 instead of an election on December 30. It’s also unusual that Sheikh Hasina formed the cabinet dropping all senior leaders,’ he said, reports the UNB.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader also said uneven incidents also took place in Ducsu elections. ‘Unusual incidents have long been happening one after another. I think no one can remain in power for long amid such unusual situation.’

Khandaker Delwar Hossain Smriti Foundation arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the eight death anniversary of ex-BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain.

Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said their party leaders and activists have got wondered, not disappointed, witnessing vote ‘robbery’ in the 11th parliamentary election.

‘We’ve initiated the process to revitalise our leaders and activists. We’re trying to minimise our organisational gap. BNP will surely restore democracy which was annihilated by Awami League,’ he said.

The BNP leader urged their party colleagues to get ready for a democratic movement instead of getting disappointed.

Speaking at the programme, Dhaka University former-VC Prof Emajuddin Ahmed said the ruling party has ‘destroyed’ democracy by ‘snatching’ people’s voting rights in the national election.

About the recent Ducsu polls, he said it is unimaginable that Dhaka University teachers worked for ensuring the victory of a particular organisation. ‘It never happened in the past. It’s a serious stigma for the university.’

He asked the BNP leaders and activists to go to people, and take to the streets with them to ‘restore’ democracy in the country.
