Juba League, BCL lock in clash near Secretariat
Dhaka: A clash reportedly between pro-Awami League organisations, Juba League and Chhatra League, left at least three people injured on Tuesday in the close proximity of the Secretariat in Dhaka.
The clash took place allegedly over submission of tenders at Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) building.
Juba League and Chhatra League activists engaged in a gunfight during which the car carrying power division additional secretary Ahmed Kaikaus was hit by a bullet, said security personnel in the building.
They said the incident took place centering tenders submission for two projects in the DPDC building. The projects are - extension of 33/11 KV substation building in Tejgaon, and development and construction of boundary walls in 132/33KV GIS substation in Madartek.
‘The deadline for the tender submission was 12:00 noon on Tuesday. Members of two groups were engaged in a clash over submission of tender at the first floor of the building injuring two or three persons’, security supervisor of the building Abdul Halim said.
Later, the groups came out from the building and exchanged three to four rounds of gunshots.
Injured, a person named Al Mamun was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital from the spot, confirmed DMCH police outpost in charge Mozammel Haque.
While contacted, DPDC chief engineer (development) Dilip Kumer Sen told NTV Online that they heard about the incident, which was very depressing.
‘We do not know who did it, but we have heard that an incident occurred there centring the tender submission,’ he said.
While asked on whether there was any police protection during the tender submission, he said, ‘Police members were deployed in the tender submission place, which is at second floor of the building, but the incident happened in the ground floor and first floor.’
A total of 11 tenders were submitted for the construction works that valued over Tk75 lakh, he added.
Meanwhile, Shahbagh police officer in charge Sirajul Islam said additional forces were sent to the spot after they had been informed about the clash, but police could not arrest anyone from there.
