Jamaat’s daylong hartal underway
Dhaka: A dawn-to-dusk hartal enforced by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami across the country, protesting the Supreme Court’s verdict that upheld the death penalty to its leader ondemned war criminal Mir Quasem Ali for his crimes against humanity in 1971, is underway peacefully in the capital with no major untoward incident reported.
No picketing was reported from the country.
The hartal has been called from 6:00am to 6:00pm on on Wednesday.
Public vehicles were seen with buses of Motijheel, Gulistan, Jatrabari, Sayedabad, Gulshan, Uttara and Mirpur routes plying on roads in capital city Dhaka.
Most of the shops and establishments were open. Office-goers were seen in their usual routine packing buses and other public vehicles to arrive at their offices.
Around 10,000 policemen are seen deployed through all key points inside the capital to ensure smooth activities of the city dwellers during the hartal.
Besides, 14 platoons of BGB were patrolling the city streets from 6:00pm Tuesday to strengthen security patrolling alongside other law enforcement agencies.
They continued patrolling till 6:00am on Wednesday.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday morning upheld the death penalty of Mir Quasem Ali for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
