Jessore: A Bangladesh Chhatra League activist suffered bullet wounds in a reported gunfight with police at Sheikhhati Kalitala in Jessore town early on Wednesday.

The victim, Arif Hossain, 22, is a member of Sadar upazila unit convening committee of BCL and son of Abul Hossain of the area.

Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station Elias Hossain said a police team conducted a drive at Sheikhhati in the early hours.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Arif launched an attack on them, forcing police to fire back.

Hit in the leg, Arif was taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital.

Police also recovered a pistol, four bullets and two sharp weapons from the spot.

Meanwhile, district BCL general secretary Anwar Hossain Bipul said police shot Arif in the leg after arresting him from in front of his house.
