Dhaka: Thirteen people were sentenced to death in separate murder cases in Chittagong, Rangpur, Gazipur and Natore districts on Wednesday.

In Chittagong, a tribunal sentenced six people—Mahmudul Islam, Sunil Das, Mizanur Rahman Chy, Md Hossain alias Prakash, Nazrul Islam alias Lal Miah, Md Selim—to death for killing a teenage boy in 2011.

According to the prosecution, Himel Das Supen, son of late Sunil Kumer Das, had gone missing when he went to visit Bandarban on May 8.

His mother Papia filed a general diary with Doublemooring thana on May 8. Later, Himel’s body was recovered from a hill in Bandarbban on May 14.

Two accused in the case-Mahmudul Islam and his younger brother Nazrul Islam- confessed to the court that Himel’s uncle Sunil Das had abducted Himel and then killed him for property. Later, police submitted a chargesheet accusing six people, including Sunil Das.

After examining the records and witnesses, Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge Selim Miah handed down the verdict.

In Rangpur, a court sentenced five people to death for killing his mentally challenged woman in 2006.

Additional District and Session Judge Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman sentenced Abdul Mazid, brother of the victim, Maminul Islam, Emdadul Islam, Ariful Islam and Anwarul Islam-to death for killing Anjila Khatun.

According to the prosecution, convict Emdadul had an enmity with his neighbour Badsha Mia over a piece of land. As a sequel to the enmity, Emdadul hired Abdul Mazid at Tk 2 lakh to kill his elder sister aiming to implicate Badshaha in the killing.

Later, on March 9, 2006, the convicts took Anjila Khatun, 30, daughter of late Abul Hossain of Kumarpur village in Priganj uapzila, to a bamboo cluster and killed her by slitting her throat.

Police recovered the body of Anjila on the following day from the bamboo cluster. Abdul Baki, elder brother of Anjila, filed a case in this connection.

Police, later, arrested Abdul Mazid and the others as Mazid made confessional statements before the court under section 164.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Session Judge Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict.

In Gazipur, Judge of Gazipur district and session Judges Court AKM Enamul Haque sentenced Ramjan alias Mukul Kosai, of Pagar Jhanu market in Tongi, to death for killing a man in 2013.

According to the prosecution, Ramjan chopped Nurul Islam to death in Jhanu market area on March 24, 2013 as a sequel to previous enmity.

Police arrested Ramjan from the spot while he was trying to flee the scene.

A Natore court sentenced Saharul Islam, son of Akkel Ali of Ragunathpur village in Lalpur upazila, to death for killing minor girl Mosaddika Khatun,6, in the upazila in 2007.

The court also acquitted the mother of Saharul from the case as the allegation brought against her could not be proved.

The prosecution said Saharul strangled Mosaddika Khatun, daughter of Mukrum Ali of Raghunathpur village, to death after snatching her ear ring on November 6 in 2007.

The victim’s family members recovered the body of the girl from the house of Saharul and informed police.
