Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader returns home today after taking treatment from a Singapore hospital.

‘A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG 085) will carry him back home at 6:00pm tomorrow (Wednesday),’ Awami League acting general secretary Mahabub-Ul-Alam Hanif, MP, told journalists at a press conference after a secretariat meeting of the party and its other associate bodies at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in Dhaka on Tuesday, the BSS reported.

He said, ‘Awami League General Secretary and Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader is now quite well. He would be able to perform his political works like before.’

Earlier, on March 3 last, the AL general secretary was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital here after suffering breathing complications.

Tests revealed three blockages in his coronary artery and subsequently he was flown to Singapore for better treatment. Quader underwent a bypass surgery on March 20 there.

Replying to a query of newsmen, Hanif said BNP always changes its stance as it has become politically bankrupt.

Referring to the BNP’s decision to contest in the by-election to Bogura-6 parliamentary seat, which fell vacant after BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir decided not to take oath of office, Hanif said BNP has gone politically bankrupt for taking its position against people as well as killing many innocent people in the name of movement.

The AL spokesman said, ‘BNP is now a weak and disorganized party . . . The party is being run from here and there — sometimes from London or Jail.’

About the outcome of today’s AL secretary-level meeting, he said the meeting chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the homecoming day of AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on May 17.

AL and other associate bodies and like-minded organizations will hold discussions on the life and works of Sheikh Hasina from May 17 to 31 on this occasion, he added.

AL joint-general secretary Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, organizing secretaries – Ahmed Hossain, BM Mojammel Haque and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, information and research secretary Advocate Afzal Hussain, science and technology secretary Engineer Abdus Sabur, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, forest and environment secretary Delwar Hossain, AL’s Dhaka South City unit president Abul Hasnat, Dhaka North City unit general secretary Sadek Khan, among others, were present.
