Dhaka: The High Court on Wednesday asked Green Line Paribahan to pay within May 22 either the rest of Tk 45 lakh or at least a partial amount as compensation to Russel Sarkar, who lost his leg in an accident in the city’s Dholaipar on April 28 last year involving a bus of the company.

A bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order after hearing a time petition filed by the bus company, reports the UNB.

Advocate Khandaker Shamsul Haque Reza and Advocate Ummey Kulsum Smrity stood for the writ petitioner while Advocate Ojiullah represented the Green Line.

Earlier on April 10, Green Line paid Tk 5 lakh to Russel and the court gave them one month to pay the rest Tk 45 lakh.

On March 12, HC asked the bus company to pay Tk 50 lakh as compensation to Russel Sarkar within two weeks.

Shamsul Haque said Green Line sought time as its owner is sick and the court gave them time until May 22 to pay the full amount or at least a partial amount of the compensation.

A luxury coach of Green Line Paribahan hit Russel’s car from behind as it stood stationary on the slope of Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar in the city on April 28 last year.

As Russel stepped out of the car to assess the damage to the car, bus driver Kabir Hossain, in an act that has drawn outrage for its sheer idiocy and callous disregard for a fellow human being, drove the bus over him and fled the scene.

Later, police detained the bus along with the driver from near the Jatiya Press Club.

Russel’s left leg was amputated from the thigh down in the process of being run over.
