BNP voices concern over missing money from Bangladesh Bank
Dhaka: Expressing concern over the hacking out of millions of dollars from Bangladesh Bank's reserve account in the United States, Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Friday said it has happened as the government has no accountability to people.
‘People now suffer from a sense of insecurity as the incidents of killing, plundering and terrorism and corruption spread all over the country as the government has no accountability to people. Money is being looted from banks in our country. Our share market is being plundered. Even, the country's money kept abroad is being stolen. It's a matter of great concern,’ he said.
He came up with the remarks while addressing a discussion arranged by Dhaka City unit of BNP-led 20-party's partner Labour Party at Photojournalists Association protesting the filing of a sedition case against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
According to media reports, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has been hacked and some $101 million was taken out from the Bangladesh Bank's account.
Nazrul, a BNP standing committee member, said the country's people, including women and children are not safe due to the government's failure. ‘This is the scenario of the country now. We need to change it... a representative government which will be accountable to people is necessary for the change and such an administration can be established through a fair election only.’
He called for holding a fair and inclusive election to install a representative government in the country.
The BNP leader alleged that the government is nakedly interfering in Union Parishad elections to ensure the victory of ruling party candidates.
He alleged that the ruling party cadres with the help of the administration and law enforcers are obstructing opposition candidates from submitting nomination papers and carrying out electioneering.
Nazrul said the BNP-led 20-party alliance has long been on a movement to restore democracy and it will surely be successful with the participation of people.
