Khulna: A Khulna Court on Sunday handed down death penalty to five people and life imprisonment to another four for abducting and subsequently killing Mirazul Islam Miraz, a minor boy, on 20 November 2013.

Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Magistrate MA Rob Howlader gave the verdict in a crowded courtroom in presence of the five convicts.

The convicts are Zahid Hassan Milon, Mohsin Reza Shaheen, Mamun Chowdhury, Sohag Hossain and Mukul.

Iqbal Hossain, Zonaki Begum Rashida, Abul Kashem Kashu and Hazrat Ali were sentenced to life term imprisonment.

The court also fined the death convicts Tk 50,000 each and the remaining four convicts Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one more year imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the convicts abducted Miraz, 12, son of Mizanur Rahman of village Loujani under Jhikargachha upazila in Jessore on 20 November 2013. Then they demanded Tk 25 lakh as ransom.

Later, local people recovered Miraz’s decomposed body from a bush of village Nangragali under the same upazila on 22 November 2013.
