SC stays Mirza Abbas’s bail
Dhaka: The Appellate Division stayed the bail granted to BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas by the High Court for a week.
A five-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha issued the order on Monday.
The other members of the bench are Justice Syed Mahbub Hossain, Justice Hassan Foyez Siddique, Justice Mirza Hossain Haider, and Justice Bazlur Rahman.
Khurshed Alam Khan was present during hearing on behalf of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) while Advocate Joynal Abedin stood for Mirza Abbas.
Earlier, on 9 March the apex court granted bail to Mirza Abbas in a graft case filed by ACC for irregularities in allocating plots.
An HC bench comprising of Justice Mohammad Ruhul Quddus and Justice Mahmudul Huq passed the order after hearing on a rule.
On 8 February, the HC issued a rule to explain why Mirza Abbas would not be given permanent bail in the case.
On 15 February, the BNP leader secured bail from the HC in two separate arson cases filed with Motijheel and Paltan police stations.
On 6 March, 2014, the ACC filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station against Mirza Abbas and several others on charge of corruption in plot allocation.
On 6 January, 2015, a Dhaka court sent BNP leader Abbas to jail rejecting his bail petition in the two arson cases filed with Motijheel and Paltan police stations after he surrendered before the court.
