Noakhali: Three people, including two suspected members of banned militant outfit Hizb-ut Tawhid, were killed during a clash at Chashir Hat Korpora village in Sonaimuri upazila on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Ibrahim Khan Rubel, 30, of Raipur upazila in Laxmipur district, Solaiman Khokan, 30, of Kachua in Chandpur, and Mujibul Haque, 42, of Khodkhosta village of Sonaimuri, according to a UNB news.

Police super of the district Elias Sharif said some 100-150 Hizb-ut Tawhid men gathered at the house of former UP member Nurul Haq for holding a clandestine meeting on Sunday night.

Sensing the presence of the activists of the banned outfit, locals cordoned off the house of Nurul early Monday.

The confined Hizb-ut Tawhid activists opened fire on the villagers around 3pm, triggering a clash that left 50 people injured from the both sides.

The angry mob then vandalised ¾ shops and houses, including the house of Nurul Haq, and set those afire.

On information, a firefighting unit rushed in and recovered the charred bodies of Rubel and Solaiman from the house of Nurul Haq while the bullet-hit body of Mujibul was recovered from his house at night, said officer-in-charge of Sonaimuri Police Station Kazi Haniful Islam.

Later, police brought the situation under control.

Local people also put up barricade on Sonaimuri-Laksham regional road, disrupting traffic for several hours.

One platoon of Border Guard Bangladesh and a team of Rapid Action Battalion-11 were deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
