Faridpur: A Faridpur court on Tuesday granted bail to The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam in a defamation suit, reports local news agency.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Hamidul Islam gave the order on a bond of Tk1, 000 after Mahfuz appeared before his court and sought bail in the morning.

The court also fixed 29 May for next hearing in the case.

On 22 February, Advocate Jahid Bapari, joint convener of Faridpur district unit Juba League, filed the Tk50 crore libel suit against Mahfuz with the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court for publishing ‘confusing’ and ‘defamatory’ reports in his daily on Awami League President Sheikh Hasina during the military-backed caretaker government.

Later on the day, the court summoned the accused to appear before it 15 March.
