Dhaka: Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday said that Bangladesh Bank‘s different systems require serious reforms.

‘It is not in a very healthy condition. This is my assessment,’ said Muhith, while talking to reporters at Cabinet Division following the meeting of the Cabinet Purchase Committee.

The finance minister’s comment came against the backdrop of cyber heist through which hackers took away $101 million from the central bank account with the US Fed in New York, reported UNB.

Muhith said the inquiry committee headed by Dr. Farashuddin will look into it. The head of committee will meet the finance minister within a day or two.

The Finance Minister also informed that the newly appointed governor of Bangladesh Bank, Fazle Kabir, will take charge on March 19 after his return from USA on March 18.

He said that appointment of two more deputy governors are under process.

‘We‘ve started the process to appoint two deputy governors. This is a lengthy process as a search committee will be needed to be formed and then they will select the candidates for the post.”

The two posts of the deputy governors, out of four, fell vacant after their removal following the resignation of Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman.

Responding to a question on making the Banking Secretary Dr. Aslam Alam OSD, he said that he was not involved in the case. But as secretary of this division he should have learnt about it. ‘Unfortunately nobody knew.’
