Dhaka: At least seven persons were killed in separate lightning strikes in Comilla, Panchagarh, Habiganj, Mymensingh and Jamalpur on Monday.

In Comilla, Mohammad Babul, 22, son of Abdul Kader Miah of Kamalnagar upazila in Lakshmipur, was killed when a thunderbolt struck him amid rain while lifting sand from the Gomti River at Gouripur Char Mohammadi village in Daudkandi upazila in the afternoon, reports UNB.

Besides, Russel, 20, son of Islam Molla of Matupi village in Titash upazila, was killed by the lightning strike while working at his field in the afternoon.

In Panchagarh, a stone quarry worker was killed and his wife injured after being struck by a thunderbolt while taking breakfast at their house at Banglabandha in Tentulia upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Ramjan Ali, 40, son of Tamijuddin of the village while the injured is Jotsna Banu, 35.

In Habiganj, separate lightning strikes killed two people, including a child, during rain in Madhabpur and Sadar upazilas at noon.

Ajman Miah, 40, son of late Abdus Sattar, died on the spot after being struck by a thunderbolt at Chanpur village in Sadar upazila while Mim Akhter, 8, daughter of Shafiqul Islam, was killed by a lightning strike at Rajnagar village in Madhabpur upazila.

In Mymensingh, a freedom fighter was killed by thunder bolt at Balipara area under Trishal upazila of the district in the morning.

The victim was identified as Ataur Rahman,65, Commander of Muktijuddah Balipara Union unit of Trishal upazila, police said.

Quoting family sources Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Trishal police station said, Ataur Rahman was struck by thunderbolt when he was working in his field at about 7:00am.

He died on the spot. Receiving information police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

He was laid to rest in his family graveyard with full state honour after Asr prayers.

In Jamalpur, a housewife died as a thunderbolt struck her at Bakshiganj upazila of the district on Monday morning, reports BSS.

The victim was identified as Rezia Khatun, 42, wife of Moulavi Miah of Uzan Panatiya Para village under Battazor union of Bakshiganj upazila of the district.

Police said Rezia Khatun was working in the kitchen when a thunder bolt struck her. She died on the spot at about 10:30 am.

Police recovered the body from her house.
