2 Khulna councillors sent to custody
Khulna: Two Khulna city councillors have been remanded in judicial custody in connection with a case filed against them by police for their suspected involvement in vandalising vehicles and assaulting policemen on duty.
Metropolitan sessions judge Anup Kumar Goshwami on Tuesday gave the order after KM Humayan Kabir, councillor of Ward 27, and Wahidur Rahman Dipu, councillor of Ward 28, surrendered before the court seeking bail.
Police filed two cases and named 45 persons, including Khulna mayor Mohammad Moniruzzaman Moni and the two councillors—Kabir and Dipu—and 250 unknown persons on charges of attacking police and vandalising vehicles during a rally called by BNP near the Power House crossing in the city on 26 November 2013.
Police after primary investigation pressed charges against 52 persons on 30 April 2015.
A court issued a warrant of arrest against 16 fugitives, including Moni and the two councillors, on 22 November 2015.
On March 16, this year, Khulna Chief Metropolitan Magistrate MLB Mesbah Uddin asked the seizure of movable property of Moni and six others, including two councillors.
Following the seizure order, on March 23, the suspended mayor Moni surrendered before a court seeking bail but the court sent Moni to jail.
