Police seeks people’s cooperation to unearth Tonu killing
Dhaka: Police has sought cooperation from the people for fair investigation into the case of slain college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu.
‘There is no need for any movement or agitation to arrest the killers involved in any killing incident. Police have the professional and moral responsibilities to arrest the killers,’ said Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Md Nazrul Islam.
He requested all sympathizers to cooperate with police in the investigation.
The Additional DIG came up with the remarks in the wake of various protests and moves by different organizations and personalities demanding arrest of the perpetrators of the much-talked about killing.
The body of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, 19, a 2nd year student of Victoria College and a member of Victoria College Theatre, was recovered from Comilla’s Mynamati Cantonment area in the evening on March 20.
The victim’s father filed a case with Kotwali Police Station on March 21.
Later, the case was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a specialized unit of police, considering importance of the incident. Besides, district police and the Detective Branch have also been investigating the matter.
It will take time to collect evidence directly or indirectly against any specific person, who might be involved in the killing, as the incident did not take place in the public eye, noted Additional DIG Nazrul.
‘It is important to arrest the real culprit based on evidence. We are committed to arrest the killers after identifying the actual perpetrators but it takes time,’ he said.
We have respect for the people’s demands to unearth the mastery of the killing, but people have to think about the sufferance created by obstacles during protests on streets, he said.
