Savar: Worried at the huge judicial backlog, Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Friday said evening courts will be introduced in Bangladesh for the quick dispensation of justice if the government responds to their call in this regard.

The chief justice said this while addressing the inaugural session of a two-day workshop at Khagan Brac Centre in Savar.

SK Sinha said there are currently 1,500 judges in the country and the number is too inadequate to deal with the workload.  

Besides, the chief justice said, 173 judges have to perform their duties in rotation for lack of courtrooms and this how the number of unsettled cases rose to 30 lakh across the country.

‘If the government responds to our call, then evening courts will be introduced soon to free the judiciary from the case backlog,’ he added.

The Supreme Court organised the workshop in association with USAID. About 40 officials of the judicial department took part in the workshop.

US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat was present on the occasion as a special guest.
