119 hurt in post-polls violence in 9 districts

Dhaka: At least 119 people were injured in post-election violence in Brahmanbaria, Jhenaidah, Natore, Panchagarh, Sherpur, Pabna, Manikganj, Faridpur and Bhola districts on Friday, reports UNB.

In Brahmanbaria, 40 people were injured in a clash between two groups of Awami League activists in Nabinagar and Ashuganj upazilas.

In Nabinagar, at least 10 people were injured as the supporters of two chairman candidates clashed in the morning.

Locals said the clash ensued between the supporters of newly elected chairman Kabir Ahmed and defeated candidate Kabir Hossain in Birgaon union.

In Ashuganj, an altercation ensued between the supporters of newly elected AL chairman Sazu Khan in Durgarampur union and AL rebel candidate Moazzem Hosaain Mazu at about 8:00am over the polls results.

In Jhenaidah, five people were injured in a clash between the followers of Awami League-backed chairman candidate and AL rebel candidate at Banshbaria village in Maheshpur upazila.

Some 5/6 houses were also vandalised during the melee.

Meanwhile, Border Guard Bangladesh members have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.

In Natore, a clash between the supporters of newly elected ruling party-blessed chairman Anisur and independent aspirant Alam left five injured.

The agitated supporters also vandalised houses, looted valuables and carried out arson attack during the melee.

In Panchagarh, five people, including three women, were injured as a clash broke out between the followers of two member candidates in Barua Para of Shalshiri union in Boda upazila in the morning.

In Sherpur, four people were injured in violence over election result at Khanchepara village in Sribardi upazila in the morning.

Some 20/25 supporters of defeated member candidate Hitler Miah carried out an attack on the supporters of newly elected member Badrul Alam Asad of ward-3 of Kakilakura Union Parishad, leaving four people injured.

In Pabna, at least 20 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two defeated member candidates in Faridpur upazila over the election result of BL Bari Union Parishad in the morning.

In Manikganj, a young man was injured as the supporters of elected AL-rebel candidate Abdul Latif carried out an attack on five houses at Bachamora union in Daulatpur upazila in the morning.

In another incident, eight people were injured in a post-election clash at Jiyonpur union in the same upazila in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, police arrested the prime accused, Arshed Ali, from Savar on Friday morning over the killing of a woman during clash over election in Daulatpur upazila.

Namesa Begum, 50, was killed in a post-election clash on Thursday night.

In Faridpur, the supporters of AL rebel chairman candidate allegedly hacked a man for casting vote for boat at Pachuria village in Alfadanga upazila.

In Bhola, at least 30 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two member aspirants over election result in Manpura upazila in the afternoon.
