Bangladesh to open nine new missions abroad

Dhaka: The government has decided to widen its diplomatic ties with foreign countries by opening nine new diplomatic missions abroad, reports UNB.

The 9th meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on Foreign Ministry, held at Sangsad Bhaban on Monday, came up with the disclosure.

The meeting said the approval for opening these missions is under process and but it did not reveal the names of the countries where those will be opened.

The meeting was informed that 14 new missions were opened in Athens (Greece), Milan (Italy), Mexico City (Mexico), Lisbon (Portugal), Istanbul (Turkey), Brasilia (Brazil), Port Louis (Mauritius), Kunming (China), Mumbai (India), Beirut (Lebanon), Vienna (Austria), Warsaw (Poland), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) during the Awami League government’s current and previous tenures (2009-2016).

Chaired by committee chairman Dipu Moni, the meeting was attended, among others, by Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, and committee members Mohammad Faruq Khan, Kazi Namil Ahmed, Sohrab Uddin and Mahzabin Khaled.

The meeting suggested introducing press wings at all diplomatic missions abroad and appointing efficient officials to those wings.
