Dhaka: The new Dhaka Central Jail, Keraniganj will be opened on Sunday, said Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Iftekhar Uddin.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to formally inaugurate the new central jail at Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital, he told a press briefing at Prison Headquarters in Old Dhaka on Friday.

Iftekhar Uddin said the prison authorities will shift all the male inmates from the existing Dhaka Central Jail to the new one after its inauguration while the women prisoners will be shifted to Kashimpur jail in Gazipur.

Refereeing to the accommodation problem of the jail guards at the new central jail, the IG Prisons said the jail employees will manage it in the greater interest.

The new central jail was built on 194.41 acres of land costing Tk 406 crore.
