Panchagarh: A schoolgirl drowned in the River Karotowa at Nimnagar in the Panchagarh town on Thursday.

The deceased is Sumi, 12, a Class VI student of Dr. Abeda Hafiz Girls School and College and daughter of Sahidul Islam of Puratan Panchagarh area of the town.

Sadar police officer-in-charge Mominul Islam Moin said Sumi went to the river in the afternoon to take bath after Pahela Baishakh celebrations and drowned.

As Sumi did not return home for a long time, the family went to the river and made a hectic search.

Later, a fire brigade team rushed in and recovered the girl from the river with the help of local people, the OC added.
