Dhaka: A female student of Dhaka University was harassed allegedly by a policeman on the university campus during the Pahela Baishakh celebrations, the first day of Bangla calendar, according to a UNB report.

The incident took place at about 7:00pm when Habiba Jannat, a student of Biostatistics and Informatics department of the university and also vice-president of the university unit of Chhatra Federation, had an altercation with a policeman, M Ruhul Amin, near Raju Sculpture when policemen obstructed her and her friends from walking towards the area as a police high official was preparing to move to Shahbagh Police from Doyel Chattar.

At one stage, the policeman alleged manhandled Jannat in a bid to clear the road and used unpleasant words.

As information of the incident spread around, other students from different student organisations rushed in and staged an impromptu demonstration in the area protesting the harassment.

Later, a meeting was held at the DU Proctor’s office. Proctor Amzad Ali and DMP DC Ramna Abdul Baten were, among others, present at the meeting.

Later, policeman Ruhul Amin sent a letter to the victim, Habiba Jannat, saying ‘sorry’ for the incident, said DMP Joint Commissioner Krishna Pad Ray.

In 2015, a good number of women, who joined the Bengali New Year celebrations, were sexually harassed by a group of miscreants in the Dhaka University’s TSC and Suhrawardy Udyan gate areas, triggering countrywide protests.
