Gazipur: An Awami League-backed union council member candidate was hacked to death by miscreants at Bankoramona village in Proholapur union of Sreepur upazila in Gazipur on Tuesday, three days ahead of the union elections.

The deceased is Akter Hossain, a resident of Marta village of the union.

Joydebpur police station officer-in-charge Khandakar Rezaul Hossain said a gang of miscreants intercepted Akter Hossain, also a local AL leader, at Bankoramona while he was returning home after his election campaign at about 11:00pm.

The gang members hacked Akter indiscriminately with sharp weapons and fled the scene, leaving him dead on the spot.

Local people spotted the body lying in the area and called police.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

Police suspected that Akter might have been killed over a previous enmity, the OC added.

Police arrested a woman named Halima, wife of Mofijul, on suspicion of her involvement in the murder.
