4 sentenced to death for killing boy
Gazipur: Four persons on Thursday got death penalty for killing a schoolboy at Pubail in Gazipur in 2004.
The convicts, all in their thirties, are Iqbal Hossain Bhuiyan, Shakil Bhuiyan and Zaman Sarker from Haribaritek area of Pubail, and Abu Sayem from the village of Latabor in Kurigram.
Among them Iqbal Bhuiyan and Shakil Bhuiyan are brothers.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan also fined them Tk 10,000 each.
According to the prosecution, convict Zaman had put forward a proposal to marry Rokhsana, daughter of Hasan Khandker. But, Rokhsana’s family turned down the proposal.
Outraged by the refusal, Zaman abducted Rokhsana’s brother Mamum, a Class VIII student of Bhadun High School, on 10 August 2004.
Later, the victim’s father filed a general diary with the Jaidebpur police.
On 13 August 2004, three days after abduction, police recovered Mamun’s body from a septic tank in the village.
The victim’s father then moved forward with a murder case against seven people.
After examining the records and 15 witnesses, Judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict. He, however, acquitted three other accused as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
