City polls by 30 Apr comfortable for police: IGP
Dhaka: Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque on Monday said the police administration would feel comfortable if the elections to the capital’s two city corporations and Chittagong City Corporation were held by 30 April.
‘Pakistan Cricket Team is scheduled to visit Bangladesh in early May. On behalf of police, we have said that it will be comfortable for us, if the elections to city corporations are arranged by 30 April,’ the IGP told reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad at the Election Commission secretariat in Dhaka.
IGP AKM Shahidul Haque, along with Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah, sat in a meeting to discuss the upcoming elections to Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC).
Claiming that a congenial atmosphere for elections now prevails in the country, the IGP said the police are ready to cooperate with the EC for holding the elections. ‘We will cooperate with the Election Commission whatever it seeks (to ensure security).’
Earlier on Monday, EC secretary Sirazul Islam told reporters that the commission had already taken all necessary preparations for the elections. Now the commission can announce election schedules at a convenient time taking the decision in this regard at its meeting, he added.
