A court on Friday put eminent journalist Shafik Rehman on a fresh five-day remand for further interrogation in a case filed over an alleged plot to abduct and kill Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

Judge Mahmudul Hasan of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s court gave the order as senior Assistant Superintendent of Police of the Detective Branch (DB) Hasan Arafat, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Shafik Rehman before the court and sought a fresh seven-day remand against him, reports UNB.

The court also rejected a plea filed by Shafik Rehman against the remand prayer, said his lawyer Jainul Abedin Mesbah.

Earlier on Saturday morning, detectives arrested Shafik Rehman, former editor of the Bangla daily Jaijaidin. He was later put on a five-day remand in a case filed in connection with a conspiracy to abduct and kill Joy.

On Tuesday, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Monirul Islam told reporters that Shafik Rehman has admitted to having several meetings with people convicted by a US court for bribing a former FBI official to get information about Joy. Some media also reported that the journalist also confessed to his link with the plot against the PM’s son.
