2 held along with 1.04kg gold at Dhaka airport
Dhaka: Customs Intelligence officials in separate drives arrested two men along with 1.04 kg gold ‘worth TK 47 lakh’ from Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport on Saturday, according to officials.
A team of CI arrested Sheikh Rony Ahmed, who had arrived at the airport by a flight from Malaysia at 0030hrs on Saturday, according to Mainul Khan, director general of the agency.
Spotting Rony’s ‘suspicious’ movement, officials challenged him and recovered two gold sticks weighing 462 grams contained in bottles of Pantene shampoo from his luggage, Mainul said.
The value of the gold seized from Rony was estimated at Tk 22 lakh.
Around noon Saturday, CI officers arrested another man along with half-a-kg gold concealed in a charger light battery.
The offender was identified as Giasuddin, from Malpara, Munshiganj. He had arrived at the airport from Malaysia by a Malaysian Airlines flight earlier in the morning.
Unlike the previous case, CI officials were tipped off about Giasuddin, and on apprehending him shortly after arrival, searched and recovered 575 grams of gold, in 15 small pieces, apart from 80 grams of ornaments worth TK 25 lakh, inside a charger light battery, said airport sources.
