2 jailed for drug offences

Rajshahi: A speedy trial tribunal on Thursday convicted three people, sentencing two to life and another to five years in prison, on drug-related offences.

The lifers are: Tarek, 32, resident of Kashiyadanga area and Hasan Ali, 42, resident of Kanthalbaria area under Rajpara thana of Rajshahi. Saiful Islam, 27, resident of Boroikuri area of Poba upazila, was sentenced to 5 years.

The court also fined Tarek and Hasan Tk 10,000 and Saiful Tk 1,000, in default of which the lifers have to suffer one year and Saiful has to suffer six months further rigorous jail term.

The sentences for Tarek and Hasan in particular appear somewhat harsh in relation to the scale of their crimes. According to prosecution, police arrested Hasan along with 50gm of heroin from Ujanpara area of Godagari upazila on February 24 last year.

Following an interrogation of Hasan, police arrested Tarek, who supplied him the heroin.

Later sub-inspector Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station, filed a case against them.

In the same year, police also arrested Saiful from Saramgongla area f the upazila along with 120 pieces of Yaba pills.

Inspector Khalilur Rahman of Department of Narcotic Control Department of the district, filed a case with the police station in this connection.

After examining all reports and witnesses, Golam Ahmmed Khalilur Rahman, judge of the tribunal passed the order.
