Man shot in ‘gunfight’

Lakshmipur: A man was injured with bullets in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Balaishpur of Bashikpur in Lakshmipur at about 4:00am on Saturday.

The injured is Mohammad Jihad, a resident of North Joypur in the sadar upazila.

Jihad’s wife Taslima Akhtar said he works at an electric factory in Chittagong.

Police said they recovered an LG and three bullets from the spot after the shooting.  

Police claimed four constables were also injured during the shootout.

The injured constables are Satyaranjan Chakma, Miran Kanti Chakma, Nur Box and Amirul Islam. They were admitted into Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.

The bullet-hit Jihad, undergoing treatment at the hospital, said he along with two men were returning his home at Rajaram Ghosh village from Chatkhil in Noakhali by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at about 8:00pm on Friday. Police intercepted their auto-rickshaw at Itpukurpar Bazar in Chatkhil.

Jihad claimed he was sent to Chandraganj police station in Lakshmipur at Friday night. Later police took him to another place and shot him.

Jihad’s wife said he came home from his workplace Chittagong on Thursday. He left home on Friday morning. Later she was informed that her husband was admitted into the hospital.

Additional Police Superintendent Junayet Kawser said police arrested him from North Joypur area on Friday night. Police took him with them on a drive to recover arms to Balaishpur area. Terrorists opened fire on police at that time. Police returned the fire in self-defence and Jihad was bullet injured.

There are five cases filed against Jihad with the sadar police station, claimed the police officer.
