Only 4 mayoral aspirants submit nominations
Dhaka: Only four mayoral aspirants, two each in Dhaka south and north city corporations' polls, submitted their nomination papers as of Sunday afternoon, the last date for nomination submission of nomination papers.
No mayoral candidate blessed by two major political parties— Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party— submitted their nomination papers as of 12:10pm.
A total of 58 mayoral aspirants collected nomination papers to contest the polls in the capital's two city corporations— Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC)— while 18 in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election.
Of them, 30 mayoral aspirants collected nomination papers for the DSCC polls while 28 for the DNCC polls.
Four mayoral hopefuls submitted nomination papers in the DSCC while the rest three in DNCC earlier.
Independent DNCC mayoral candidates Babi Hajjaj and Quamrul Islam submitted their nomination papers to DNCC returning officer Shah Alam at his Agargaon office at about 11:30am on Sunday.
Meanwhile, two mayoral candidates Baharan-e-Sultan Bahar and SM Akram submitted their nomination to DSCC returning officer Mihir Sarwar Morshed at about 11:45am.
Besides, 18 mayoral aspirants purchased nomination papers in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election and three of them submitting their nomination papers earlier.
BNP-blessed and Chattagram Unnayan Andolan platform's mayoral candidate M Manjur Alam Manju submitted his nomination paper on Sunday to contest the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls.
Manjur together with senior BNP leaders, including party vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman and city unit BNP president Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, submitted the nomination paper to returning officer Abdul Baten at the regional Election Office at about 9:00am.
On 18 March, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the election schedules for DSCC, DNCC and CCC fixing voting on 28 April.
According to the schedules, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is 29 March while the nomination papers will be scrutinised on 1 and 2 April and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 9 April.
