Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to open ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr two major expanded highways linking Dhaka with port city of Chittagong and Mymensingh.

‘She (PM) is scheduled to open the two four-lane highways pressing buttons at a ceremony at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) at about 11:00am on 1 July,’ said communication ministry officials.

The government in 2006 had approved the Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane project to expand the crucial highway from Daudkandi toll plaza to Chittagong city gate involving Taka 2,168 crore.

The project, however, was revised twice subsequently with enhanced cost and reset design.

The project cost eventually stood at Taka 3,816.94 crore while the length of the expanded part f the high way remained to be 192.48kilometers.

On the other hand, the four-lane upgrading of 87-km highway from Mymensingh to Joydebpur will facilitate quicker transportation of agricultural and industrial products from Mymensingh division and Gazipur district to Dhaka.
