Narsingdi: A union council member was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Monday at Kararchar in Narshingdi, about 42 kilometres from the capital Dhaka.

Arif Hossain Pathan, in his forties, was a member of Potia union council and resident of Uttar Kararchar village at Shibpur in the district.

Six gunmen riding on three motorcycles came and shot Arif Hossain while he was taking tea in a roadside tea-stall on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at about 12:30pm, said police.

He died on the way to hospital.

Aggrieved local people kept the highway blocked for about two hours in protest at the killing.
