Dhaka: A blood-soaked young man who was detained from outside the Holey Artisan Bakery during the hostage standoff died at a Dhaka hospital on Friday afternoon, reports UNB.

Jakir Hossain Shawon, 22, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at about 5:00pm, said sub-inspector Bachchu of the DMCH police camp.

Shawon, who was admitted to the hospital on 4 July, was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit at noon following deterioration of his condition.

Police detained the youth as a suspect after he came out of the Spanish restaurant in the early hours of 2 July during the hostage crisis.

Later, he was taken to the Detective Branch office for interrogation, said a DB official wishing anonymity.

However, family members claimed that he was an employee of the café and had no connection with the attackers.

In the evening of 1 July, gunmen stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery and opened fire and took around 40 people, including restaurant staff and guests—both locals and foreigners—hostage.

Twenty hostages—nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis—were killed in the terror attack at the restaurant.

Besides, two senior police officers—Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Ahmed Khan and Detective Branch assistant commissioner Robiul Islam—were killed as they tried to rescue the hostages.

Thirteen people, including three foreigners, were rescued while 20 bodies of the hostages were recovered from the restaurant after a successful operation codenamed ‘Thunderbolt’.

Six alleged gunmen were killed and one suspected militant was arrested during the drive.
