Bangladesh shuts unauthorised TV channels including Peace TV
Dhaka: Bangladesh government has decided to stop the broadcast of unauthorised television channels, including controversial Islamic programme broadcaster Peace TV.
The decision came in the wake of deadly militant attacks on an elite restaurant in Dhaka and in the country’s largest Eid congregation at Sholakia, Kishoreganj.
The decision was made in a meeting of the cabinet committee on law and order at the Secretariat, said Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, who chaired the meeting, at a press conference in the Secretariat.
Peace TV is a wing of Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), based in Mumbai of India. IRF president Zakir Naik, a widely popular Islamic preacher, and his activities came under observation after the Dhaka restaurant attackers were found devoted fan of the preacher.
After July 1 terror attack at a Spanish restaurant in Dhaka's diplomatic enclave Gulshan, it was reported that two of the seven attackers who killed 22 people, including 18 foreigners, were inspired by the Islamic orator's speeches.
Indian authorities on Friday said they are examining and analysing the speeches of Naik and appropriate action will follow.
'We have taken cognizance of Zakir Naik's speeches and necessary instructions have been issued in this regard,' Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said.
Naik, who is based in Mumbai, said he 'totally disagreed' that he had inspired the terror attack in Dhaka.
'There is not a single talk of mine where I encouraged one to kill another, whether Muslim or non-Muslim,' he has said in a statement.
