UC member, brother killed in Munshiganj clash

Munshiganj: A newly elected union council member and his brother were killed and at least 12 people injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Char Bolaki in Gazaria upazila on Thursday evening, reports UNB.
The deceased are Golap Sarkar, 45, a member of Hosendi union council, and his younger brother Ayub Sarker, 28.
Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Saiful Hasan said two groups of villagers—one led by Abdul Matin, ex-chairman of Hosendi union council, and the other by Nazmul Hossain—had long been at loggerheads over establishing dominance in the area.
On Thursday evening, the supporters of the two groups locked into a clash over previous rivalry.
A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee when both sides also traded gunfire, leaving 14 people injured, including seven with bullets.
The two siblings were taken to Sonargaon Health Complex in Narayanganj where duty doctors declared the duo dead.
Five of the injured were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital while the rest to Munshiganj General Hospital.
Meanwhile, police detained five of the injured from the Munshiganj General Hospital.
